Clementine Blakemore Architects

CBA is an emerging London-based practice committed to producing buildings that are inventive, inclusive and have a positive impact on the wider community. We enjoy making architecture rooted in place and shaped by context, whether in terms of local materials, climate or craftsmanship. Our design process is rigorous, exploratory and collaborative – involving clients, consultants and end-users in the resolution of proposals. Ideas are developed and represented through a tactile combination of drawing, model-making, mock-ups and material research. We aim to achieve high environmental standards through the implementation of passive strategies, renewable energy and sustainable materials, always seeking to integrate these elegantly through careful detailing and contemporary ways of thinking. Having self-built a number of projects, we take great pleasure in the process of transforming design ideas into built form.

In 2019 we completed a new Music Pavilion for a state primary school in Buckinghamshire, which was shortlisted for the Wood Awards and AJ Small Projects Awards. We are currently working on the conversion of a series of derelict farm buildings in West Dorset into accessible holiday accommodation, alongside an educational farm and community space; the project is on site and due to complete in September 2021. Previous clients include the Design Museum, the Dorset Wildlife Trust, and the UK Green Building Council. In 2020 we were included in the Architects’ Journal prestigious 40 under 40 list, “the unique who’s who of the nation’s next generation of boundary-pushing designers and innovators.”  Please scroll down for the latest news.

Clementine Blakemore | Director

Prior to starting her own practice, Clem worked for Duggan Morris Architects, David Chipperfield Architects and was a co-founder of the collective WORKSHOP architecture. She initially studied sculpture at the Ruskin School of Art, Oxford University, under Richard Wentworth and then worked in film before training as an architect. After a year at the Rural Studio in Alabama, she gained her qualifications at the Architectural Association (RIBA Part 1) and the Royal College of Art (RIBA Part 2), graduating with a Distinction. With a strong belief in collaboration and the process of learning through making, she has led a number of design/build workshops and was a Visiting School Director for the Architectural Association between 2012 – 2017.

Louis Mayes | Architectural Designer

Having previously studied architectural history, Louis completed his studies at the School of Art and Architecture at London Met. Hands-on construction has been key to his training; he designed and collaboratively built a rammed earth house in Ghana and a community workspace in Tottenham. Outside of his work with CBA, Louis writes for Blueprint Magazine and was part of a design team recently shortlisted for a competition proposing the reuse of a church in Brighton.
